“All the forces on this planet, will never beat that of a mother’s love.”
-Elle Smith, The Way Back Home
History happened in the U.K. on June 19th 2018 when Hannah Deacon, mom of Alfie Dingley, was issued a license for medical cannabis.
And like a pebble that precipitates a landslide…
A large movement for legalization of medical cannabis came marching at the doorstep of the U.K. government.
How did this happen?
When Alfie was five years old, he started having seizures. He was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy that ended in 48-times of hospital admissions in just 1 year. Every month he had seizure attacks up to 150 times.
150 seizures!
Hannah had to make a choice. So, she took Alfie to Holland and was given medical cannabis by doctors.
IT WORKED INSTANTLY!
However, cannabis remained an illegal drug U.K.—but a mother’s love will always go against the odds even if defeat is certain.
So, she set up the Alfie’s Hope Campaign and made a petition on Change.org in January 2017. The petition received more than 370,000 signatures on it, which later rose to 850,000 signatures. These signatures brought hope to Alfie’s family.
“When you create a petition and when you have that much support, it makes you feel strong and it makes you feel powerful,” says Hannah Deacon in an interview. “And I knew that we would win.”
On June 19th 2018, Hannah got a phone call from Minister Hurd who said Alfie would be issued with his license.
Hannah earned her victory in the battle… She has yet to win the war.
She fought for other families to get access to medical cannabis. This eventuated to the legalization of medical cannabis in the U.K.
Medical Cannabis became available to patients on NHS prescriptions on November 1st 2018.
One petition of a loving mother against a venerated, age-old stigma surrounding the cannabis plant…
And her petition won.
